Demystifying Construction Standards: Technical and Legal Aspects

On April 30, 2019, some 100 construction sector stakeholders attended the conference entitled “Demystifying Construction Standards: Technical and Legal Aspects”.

Organized jointly by Lapointe Rosenstein Marchand Melançon and Technorm, this training session presented an update of construction standards.

Louis P. Brien, partner and head of our Insurance Group, and Marc-André Langevin, Eng., President of Technorm, highlighted a number of factors to be considered in every construction project. Mélissa Rivest, partner and head of our Construction Group, moderated the discussion.

Here are the main factors to keep in mind:

• It is important to distinguish between the notions of standards and rules of practice;
• Verification of applicable regulations is paramount in any construction, revamping or post-disaster restoration work, otherwise a significant increase in costs and lead times can be expected;
• Stakeholders in any project (professionals, authorities having jurisdiction, contractors and subcontractors) need to coordinate properly; otherwise, a money pit could be opened!
